Special Guardianship Orders

We’re very experienced in carrying out Special Guardianship assessments for different local authorities and members of the public.

A Special Guardianship Order is an order appointing one or more people to be a child’s ‘Special Guardian’. It’s a private law order made under the Children Act 1989 and is intended for those children who cannot live with their birth parents and who would benefit from a legally secure placement. Often it’s a way that a child might still have convenient contact with their birth parents, but not live with them.

An assessment needs to be made of the person applying to be a Special Guardian. Undertaking this assessment is a specific skilled a social work task, therefore all assessors have a minimum of three years’ experience in this area. We know each local authority runs the process for assessing differently, using a variety of documentation. Therefore we will mirror this via the use of a ‘Nuance Document’ outline – which is aimed ensuring our assessments meet the local authority’s specific criteria.
