Divorce and Separation

Divorce and Separation

Divorce and separation can shatter lives – not only for the couples who are immediately affected. Our psychiatrists, psychologists and therapists offer services for those affected by issues such as domestic violence, anger management, and depression on our pages for adults and children. This page deals with family law, when decisions are to be made about your children: where they live, who they see and how often. Children have a right to a relationship with both of their parents when it is safe for them and in their best interests. Our experts are used to working with those involved in legal proceedings through their expert witness experiences. We offer assessments covering the following areas:

  • Adult mental health, e.g. anxiety, personality disorder, depression (including post-natal depression)
  • The ability of a parent to support and facilitate contact, and the barriers to this
  • Risks relating to domestic violence, physical and sexual abuse
  • Drug and alcohol misuse, including testing
  • Anger management
  • Child’s wishes and feelings in relation to contact
  • The impact of divorce/separation on children’s emotional, physical and social wellbeing

We can arrange therapy within days. If you need an assessment and report for the court, these can usually be provided within 2-6 weeks from receiving instructions. All of our experts are totally independent and we value their integrity. Their overriding duty is to the court – you will not be able to “buy” yourself an opinion: ‘An expert in family proceedings has an overriding duty to the court that takes precedence over any obligation to the person from whom the expert has received instructions or by whom the expert is paid’ – Practice Direction 25B. Their report will take into account all of the information they are provided with, including documents from the court bundle, information provided during the assessment meeting, and the results of any tests completed. The court ultimately makes its decision based upon the best interests of the child. To find out how we can help, contact our referrals team on 01623 661 089 or email us.
