We were founded in 2001 as an independent company, but now we’re proudly part of the Core Assets group’s vision to make positive and lasting changes to people’s lives.

While they were working as Children’s Guardians, Christine Carter and Christine Brown noticed that the legal professionals they worked with would value a service that would help them find reliable expert witnesses.

This led them to create Carter Brown Associates, founded on a guiding principle of offering access to the best quality experts, quickly and conveniently. Our service quickly grew – alongside our reputation – and led to us becoming the national assessment company we are today.

In our early years, the “two Christines” – Carter and Brown – concentrated on providing expert witnesses for family law cases locally, in the East Midlands and South Yorkshire. At first, they recruited associates by relying on their network of friends and colleagues within independent social work. Later, they broadened the company’s range of expertise to include psychologists, psychiatrists, paediatricians and therapists.

Purely through word of mouth recommendations from the legal community, our services become increasingly sought-after, and we began providing expert witnesses across England and Wales.

Our business grew rapidly over the next few years, and in 2010 we won an award for high growth readiness from the East Midlands Development Agency. We also expanded our range of expert witness services to criminal law (and other areas), and started carrying out pre-proceedings assessments for local authorities.

In 2012 Carter Brown was acquired by Core Assets: the successful independent children’s services company. As well as providing a range of children’s services, they have 20 years’ experience of being the largest independent fostering service in the UK (Foster Care Associates) and are a rapidly-growing fostering provider internationally.

Core Assets are also responsible for the research-focused Rees Centre at Oxford University and the voluntary adoption agency, Adopters for Adoption.

In 2012 Christine Brown retired, as did Christine Carter in 2014, but their legacy of high standards and quality service continues. We are now led by Mark Cartridge, who has a wealth of experience in assessments, local authority and legal work.

We’ve also expanded what we do: as well as expert witnesses, we now offer assessments, therapy, training, events and consultancy for local authorities, families, individuals and other organisations.

We carry through the rigor and attention to detail required for the courts in to all the work we do.

As part of our continual development, we’ve become The Expert Service. This has a double meaning in that we provide expert assessments, but we also offer a unique brand of “expert service”: we set the high standards that others strive to emulate.

care for the environment, employees, experts and charities

We support the local community through events and initiatives for a variety of organisations, including Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice, Macmillan Cancer Support, Children In Need and Wear It Pink.

Care for the environment is a key responsibility and an important aspect of the way in which we do business. We recycle our office waste, monitor energy use and transact most of our business through electronic methods, keeping postal use to a minimum. Our continuing paperless office initiative has reduced our use of paper drastically. Travel distances are closely monitored for both employees and experts: there is an informal car-sharing scheme in place for employees, and through our localism initiative we allocate cases geographically in an effort to minimise unnecessary travel.
